Schoolchildren in 30 schools in Estonia will shortly be embarking on a pilot project for a new way of learning mathematics, computer-based mathematics, that reduces the emphasis on computation — doing sums — and increases the emphasis on understanding the uses of mathematics in real-world examples. Jon McLoone is Content Director for computerbasedmath.org, a project to redefine school math education assuming the use of computers. The company announced a deal with the Estonian Education ministry to trial a self-contained statistics program replacing the more traditional curriculum. Estonia has been at the forefront of education reform. Last year it rolled out a trial to teach children from as young as seven robotics and how to program.
